Seeds are the least expensive way to start a home garden and the least forgiving. A plant bought from a nursery has already come through its most difficult stage. A seed has not.

Germination Depends on Soil Mix, Depth and Moisture

Seed-starting soil is not the same as potting soil. It needs to be finer and lighter so a small root can push through it.

Sowing depth follows seed size. A general rule is to cover a seed to about twice its own depth. Small flower seeds go barely under the surface. Larger vegetable seeds go deeper.

Moisture has to stay steady. Soil that dries out stops germination. Soil that stays saturated rots the seed before it sprouts.

Warmth matters more than light until the seed breaks the surface.

Most failures at home come from sowing too deep or letting the surface dry out between waterings.

Feeding Begins After the First True Leaves

A seed carries its own food supply. The first leaves that appear are seed leaves, and they run on that stored energy.

Feeding starts after the true leaves open, which is when the seedling begins drawing on the soil. Feeding before that point can burn young roots.

Seedlings need dilute, light feeding rather than the doses used on established plants. Strength matters more than frequency at this stage.

Potting on comes next. Once roots fill the starting tray, the seedling moves to a larger container before growth slows.
